Edwin Joseph is an Indian actor, writer, and operatic baritone. He was born in Kerala to Malayali parents, but grew up in Delhi where he began his professional work. He is currently based in New York City.
He has appeared in various capacities on stages across North America, Asia and Europe.
He recently made his Broadway debut in Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot at Lincoln Center Theater, directed by Bartlett Sher. Edwin was a member of the ensemble and covered the roles of ‘King Arthur’ and ‘Sir Lionel’.
Edwin played the groom, ‘Hemant Rai’ in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding at the Abdul Nasser Theater in Doha, Qatar as part of special programming for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
On-camera credits include leading roles in Alien of Extraordinary Ability (dir. Raghav Puri; Brooklyn Film Festival world premiere) and Lion and the Firebird (dir. Daniel Byers; FilmQuest, Screamfest!, Atlanta Horror Film Festival selections)
Edwin was a 2021 District Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition. He is a 2018 Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholar, and a recipient of the Julia Havemeyer Fellowship at Yale. He is a winner of the Francis Wacziarg Prize (2018), and a finalist in the Giulio Gari International Voice Competition (2019).
A graduate of the Masters in Music program at Yale University, he studied under legendary American opera singers Richard Cross and Doris Yarick-Cross. Edwin also holds a bachelors degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
Prior to coming to the US, Edwin lived and worked in Mumbai, India where he made his professional debut as the ‘Beast’ in Disney Theatrical’s first Indian project, Beauty and the Beast. His performance was critically acclaimed and the show enjoyed multiple successful seasons in Mumbai and Delhi selling over 150,000 tickets.
In 2020, he appeared as ‘Riolobo’ in Florencia en el Amazonas by Daniel Catán in Yale Opera’s production at the historic Schubert Theater in New Haven, CT.
He was a 2020 Apprentice Artist with the Glimmerglass Festival in New York where he was contracted to sing ‘Morald’ in their cancelled (COVID-19), new production of Wagner’s seldom performed first opera Die Feen (conducted by Joseph Colaneri and directed by Francesca Zambello).
Other opera credits include ‘Babayan’ in Chautauqua Opera’s production of ¡Figaro! (90210) (Mozart/Guerrerio), where he also performed ‘Wilhelm’ and covered ‘Figaro’ in their production of Ghosts of Versailles by John Corigliano.
American theatre credits include three productions at Yale Cabaret: ‘Dragon' in Doireann McMahon’s new work How to Relearn Yourself (Directed by Maeli Goran), Pandora and DJ Anonymous in ‘Ambient Dreams for Sleep Deprived Teens’ and, ‘Javier Garcia-Madero’ in Christopher Nunez’s new work Taking Warsan Shire out of Context on the Eve of the Great Storm (Directed by Olivia Plath).
In India, he regularly worked as a session singer and voice-over artist including collaborations with various prolific Indian music directors like AR Rehman, Pritam and Amit Trivedi. Notably, he was the voice of ‘Ernesto de la Cruz’ in the Hindi language dub of Disney/Pixar’s Academy Award winning film, Coco. Edwin has also performed as a session vocalist with various jazz and funk bands in India
He was a company member of the Neemrana Music Foundation in Delhi from 2016-2018, and trained with French- Catalan vocal coach, Jasmin Martorell. During this time, he appeared in many shows, including L'enfant et les sortilèges, El niño judío, La vida breve, Roméo et Juliette and El retablo de maese Pedro. He performed in venues like the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Siri Fort Auditorium, NCPA and Royal Opera House (Mumbai).
